Condemn the antidemocratic repression of opposition to imperialism
The American Party of Labor, emphatically and in no uncertain terms, condemns the recent actions carried out by the government of Daniel Noboa and the Consejo Nacional Electoral (CNE) against the mass political organization Popular Unity (Unidad Popular) in Ecuador. The cancellation of Popular Unity’s legal registration on Apr. 26, 2026, through a deeply contested and fraudulent process, represents a grave escalation in the campaign to silence opposition forces and restrict democratic participation in Ecuador.
Popular Unity has been effectively made illegal. It can no longer operate under the Ecuadorian electoral system, meaning that it can’t run candidates, appear on ballots, or join coalitions. It can’t fundraise or publicly use party symbols. It loses press access. Popular Unity could have party property, bank accounts, and equipment such as printing presses seized.
This action, carried out under the pretext of alleged deficiencies in membership requirements, exposes the increasingly authoritarian character of the US imperialist-backed Noboa government. The CNE’s decision, secured only through a tie-breaking vote by its president, Diana Atamaint, after a divided and controversial session, reveals an institution acting not as an impartial arbiter, but as a political instrument aligned with reactionary interests at home and imperialism abroad. The exclusion of Popular Unity from the electoral registry just months before key elections exposes the political sleight of hand of this maneuver.
The Noboa administration’s policy is not about upholding electoral law or democratic norms. It is a calculated effort to weaken people’s movements, fragment popular organizations, and consolidate power ahead of the upcoming elections. The removal of legal political organizations from the electoral arena, especially under disputed circumstances, constitutes a direct attack on the political rights of workers, activists, indigenous populations, and the Ecuadorian people as a whole.
Equally alarming are the widespread denunciations of procedural violations and irregularities surrounding the CNE’s decision. Reports of internal divisions, last-minute “bait and switches,” and contested legal justifications point to a process lacking any and all transparency and legitimacy. These actions form part of a broader pattern aimed at criminalizing dissent and marginalizing the forces that challenge the interests of Ecuador’s ruling elites and their imperialist sponsors.
The much-invoked “rule of law” in Ecuador is increasingly revealed as a façade—one that masks the systematic erosion of democratic space and the use of state institutions to suppress political opposition. The cancellation of Popular Unity is not an isolated administrative act. It is a political decision designed to exclude a significant force of the popular movement from national life.
The American Party of Labor condemns in the strongest terms the cancellation of Popular Unity by the Consejo Nacional Electoral as an anti-democratic measure aimed at silencing opposition voices. We denounce the role played by Daniel Noboa and Diana Atamaint in advancing a political agenda that subverts democratic rights and consolidates executive control over people’s institutions.
The American Party of Labor proudly and defiantly affirms its unwavering solidarity with the members and supporters of Popular Unity and with the Ecuadorian working class and the broad masses of the Ecuadorian people in their struggle for political representation, democracy, and social justice.
Hands off Popular Unity!
Defend democratic rights in Ecuador!
Down with fascistic repression!
Solidarity with the workers and peoples of Ecuador!
